Internet Connection Founder Receives STCC Alumni Award
Victoria Alger White of Northampton received the 1998 Distinguished Alumni Award of Springfield Technical Community College on May 28 at the College's 31st commencement exercises at the Springfield Civic Center. White is the founder and owner of The Internet Connection which provides Internet training and consultation. The Distinguished Alumni Award is given annually to recognize outstanding achievement by a graduate of STCC.
White, who is a graduate of STCC's General Studies program, went on to complete a B.A. in chemistry and then an M.B.A., both at the University of Massachusetts. She taught chemistry at Cornell University, and has since taught Internet courses, at UMass in the department of Polymer Science and Engineering, and at STCC through the Center for Business and Technology.
At the Internet Connection, White provides Internet and computer classes, individualized instruction, and privately sponsored seminars in subjects such as HTML, marketing on the Internet, virtual commerce for manufacturers, the Internet lawyer, finding a job using the Internet, and more. She has made numerous presentations at conferences, and has presented work on Internet accessibility issues to the Computer Ethics Institute, the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council, the Massachusetts Educational Computing Conference, and the University of Massachusetts.
White started her company in late 1994 and now has six employees with plans to use an STCC intern. She is an advisor to the Computer Ethics Institute, advising Vice President Al Gore on the Internet in 1994. White is a member of the Board of Directors of the Northampton Chamber of Commerce, and chairs the Education Committee. She is a member of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and the National Computer Security Association.
